A sketch of the gas particles layout in case of travelling sound wave (above) and standing sound wave (below). In case of travelling wave each particle oscillates in the direction of wave (compression, rarefaction) movement. In case of standing wave some particles are stationary (nodes), while some particles possess maximum amplitude (antinodes).
